Re: Rooney dropped vs Slovenia
So you only need to be able to head a ball to make it as an international footballer? And ball control isn't a necessity for a winger?

Fucking hell, the things you learn on here.

It's WHO Branded, you should be used to it.

I reckon if Antonio had played against Malta with all those crosses, he'd have a nice match ball in his cabinet by now as he would have had a field day.

Re: Rooney dropped vs Slovenia
I recon Antonio would have done well against that lot. Its not ball control you need its goal scoring. Sometimes you just cant even fucking make up the shit prople post on here.

Re: Rooney dropped vs Slovenia
Problem with Stones is that he's not a great defender yet, so there are always going to be scares.

He'll learn though and at least has great potential.

Got to agree with Russ about Stones - never seen what all the fuss is about. It's only a matter of time before he gets found out at City and Pep has to drop him. In his favour, he looks comfortable on the ball and can be very effective bringing the ball out from defence. But he has way too many errors in him and gets caught in possession too often.

David Platt was an excellent footballer.

Didn't bother watching last night. Couldn't have been as bad as when we played there, could it?

Grumpster 11:19 Wed Oct 12
Re: Rooney dropped vs Slovenia
Players don't need to be so called international quality to improve the team or get vital goals.

The likes of Platt years ago and Crouch more recently weren't magnificent, but they knew how to be in the right place at the right time and goals win you games.

I'm very pleased we've taken 4 points from two difficult away games, yes.

Did we play well? No. Would I have picked the same team? No.

But, as I said last night, people seem to have a hugely misplaced sense of England's place in football history. Failing to qualify for tournaments was not uncommon, now we are expected to win every qualifying game, in spite of the fact that the very best teams in the world don't win every qualifying game.

There is, quite simply, no logic to suggesting England are a shit team and then being disappointed with 4 points from the two most difficult fixtures in our group.

How can you be pleased with that performance last night. It was fucking farcical.

Yes, we have taken 4 points from 6 in 2 away games. And no doubt we will go on and qualify with a good points total.

But the bottom line is the performance against Malta was abject. Scotland beat them 5-1 won away. Last nights performance was a joke.

For me, we should be beating these teams. Comfortably. I don't mean that disrespectfully. Slovakia and Slovenia do have decent players. But if we were playing well and getting results then ok, but we are playing poorly. So poorly.

Are you seriously happy that your goalkeeper has saved us from a heavy defeat to Slovenia?

What you on about?

Stones gave the ball away. He did it several times in dangerous positions. I said I would give him the benefit of the doubt due to his age the difficulty of playing in that position. But the fact is regardless of that passing the ball to their players in your own third is fucking criminal. The fact that you think he was our best outfield player says it all really.

I applaud the lad for trying to play the game the right way but he needs to cut this out.

And why have you only put half of what I said about as if to infer I was saying Cahill was better than Stones? I was not making any comparison whatsoever.

What I actually said was “Cahill looks the real deal, strong, powerful and commanding. But he is often clumsy, rash and loses his positional sense.”

Cahill is good in the air and decent enough on the ball and rarely gives it away. But he does lose concentration and often finds himself caught in last ditch situations. With a bit more composure and positional play when defending it would cut all this out.

His ball control is nowhere near that of an international footballer.

Been held back by having diabolical managers for years

we've drafted in managers from all over the place with some of the best cvs in the game, and nothing really changes.

personally, and I don't really like the term, I think we have no IDENTITY. We're constantly trying to copy whoever the flavour of the month is. After France in 98 it was copying their academy in Clairefontein. Then Spain started winning everything so we tried to copy them. Then the Germans, so we try to copy what they do. For years, all we've heard about is how we aren't good enough in possession and our possession STATS aren't high enough; so all we do now is pointlessly keep the ball and do fuck all with it. But we have good STATS, so that's ok.

Lingard is so far off being international quality, it's untrue.

Bu then again, he plays for Man U.

'It's not even us being biased with Antonio, the bloke is simply a brilliant goal scoring winger with more headers in the past year than any other player, which is something you can't say about any of the others.'

That may be the case, but to be fair he's not international quality. The fact he's in the England squad just shows how bad things are right now.

Been held back by having diabolical managers for years, mixed with having far too many players who don't really seem to care enough.

Unfortunately I doubt we'll ever have anyone who actually picks the most deserving players, instead of purely because of which club shirt they wear, which is quite frankly a little embarrassing.

It's not even us being biased with Antonio, the bloke is simply a brilliant goal scoring winger with more headers in the past year than any other player, which is something you can't say about any of the others.

And I may not overly rate Drinkwater, but fuck me the fact he's being Henderson/Dier in the pecking order is a disgrace.

yep, and that team drew in FINLAND before needing an injury time free kick from David BECKHAM to draw against GREECE just to qualify.

'Stones, no doubt will be a great player, and I will give him benefit of the doubt that he is learning his trade in a very important position. But no excuse to get caught in possession and pass the ball to their players. Cahill looks the real deal, strong, powerful and commanding. '

Cahill is poor, he wouldn't be anywhere near the Chelsea team if it wasn't for injuries.

Stones was our best outfield player.

Sturridge was appalling, so greedy. He isn't half as good as he thinks he is.

Sterling is our best player at the moment.

Re: Rooney dropped vs Slovenia
Last half decent team we had was 2002. We've been on a steady decline since 1996 and this is as bad as it's been. I'd even fancy the 1994 flops to beat this mob.

stewie griffin 10:29 Wed Oct 12
Re: Rooney dropped vs Slovenia
here's what I don't get - if England are a poor team, then why on earth are people disappointed with a draw in Slovenia? The two things don't really match up.
Personally, I don't think we're all that good, and we've taken 4 points from tricky away games against Slovakia and Slovenia, so I'm pretty pleased.

Going to these poverty stricken shitholes isn't easy. Germany lost in Poland and Ireland in qualifying for the Euros. Spain lost in Slovakia. They're both better sides than we are.
